MICHAEL LION
Bass-Baritone
Michael Lion initially studied piano and then switched to conducting, graduating with an artistic diploma from the Nuremberg University of Music.
He then completed an external vocal course there, graduating with an artistic diploma in solo singing.
Hans Sotin coached him vocally from 2010-2021.
Michael Lion had his first guest engagements at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, including as the First Soldier in Richard Strauss' “Salome”, Master Ortel in “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” and Marches in “La traviata”.
From February 2001 to July 2002, he was engaged as 2nd bass in the opera choir of the Chemnitz Theatre.
He had his first permanent solo engagement at the Städtebundtheater Hof (2002-2007).
Michael Lion has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Landestheater Coburg since 2008-2025. He has sung roles including Don Pasquale, Prince Gremin, Colline, Balstrode, Kaspar, Leporello, King Henry, Scarpia and Ochs.
Guest engagements and stand-ins have taken him to the Singapore Lyric Opera as Dr. Bartolo (Barbiere), to the Mannheim State Theatre as Balstrode, to the Meiningen State Theatre as Colline and King Marke and to the National Concert Hall in Taipei as Gurnemanz.
In recent seasons, he has delighted audiences and critics with roles in Wagner, such as Gurnemanz, Wotan in Rheingold and Walküre, Wanderer and Hagen.
In January 2025 we will see the bass as Daland in “Der fliegende Holländer”.
